When I decided to start writing this article for Southeast LifeStyle Newspaper I had to come up with a name and I chose “A Culinary Adventure”. And, I am so happy that I did and that Marty liked the name because I am still finding Culinary Adventures all around me.
One such find is The Sweet Shoppe Bakery in High Point, NC. The bakery is located at 2008 N. Centennial Avenue (thesweetshoppebakery.com). I have driven past the bakery many times in the past five years, always telling myself that I need to stop. However, it was not until recently that I made my first visit to the bakery. I stopped in early one morning on my way to the office and was greeted by the most helpful sales person, who proceeded to explain the offerings in the display case and the current specials. Since this was my first visit, I will admit that I was a little overwhelmed by all the delicious looking cookies, cupcakes, gingerbread boys, brownies, donuts (one of my favorites), date & lemon bars, cinnamon buns, danishes, pies, cakes and so much more. Honestly, I could keep writing and fill up this entire article with just the wonderful assortment of items that were on display.
I have found a new favorite at the shop - the chocolate chip truffle cookie. Outwardly, it appears to be your everyday chocolate chip cookie, but when you bite into it you will find a delicious, creamy chocolate truffle filling. Yum! If you are a chocolate fanatic (as I am) you will order more of these cookies than any of us ever need to eat. That being said, the donuts are second on my list of favorites. Go check them out for yourself and let me know what becomes your favorite.
When I returned to do the interview for this article, I learned about the history of the shoppe which makes my find even more incredible to me. I love it when I can find a food establishment that produces delicious foods and has a history and personality that lures me back time and time again. This is the case with The Sweet Shoppe Bakery, the owners and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and will do their best to make your trip as pleasurable and rewarding as possible.
In talking to Judy Cagle I learned about how her Dad, Mom, Aunt and Uncle started The Sweet Shoppe as a donut shop in 1946 after World War II. It was not until several years later that they decided to construct the shop that is in the front of the bakery. Since then they have been satisfying the sweet tooth of many Guilfordians. In September, The Sweet Shoppe Bakery will celebrate 65 years in business! I for one, am very thankful for their contribution both to my craving for delicious dessert, and for being a part of this community.
You can also purchase beautiful cakes for birthdays, parties, special occasions and of course weddings. I especially liked the photo cakes. While I was there, I had the opportunity to watch the decorators create one of these edible works of art. The cake was created by scanning a photo and then printing it on sugar which is then laid on the cake icing, and in just a few seconds it looks as if the photo was printed right on the cake.
So go ahead, make that trip to The Sweet Shoppe Bakery and pick up something wonderful today. Oh, Judy did tell me that if you are really in the mood for a box of donuts you might want to call ahead to make sure there are some available, they only make a few each day. After you go please let me know what your favorite is at the shop.
If you have a culinary discovery that you would like for me to write about, please let me know either on my blog or by emailing me at Travis@foodfabulous.net.
